The three Amendments that make up the Bill of Rights I find to be most important are Amendment I, Amendment IV, and Amendment VIII.
I find Amendment I (freedom of speech) to be very important as it protects our individuality, the right to express concerns, and to express that to others. If our freedom of speech were to never have been exercised, things would not be as they are today. Martin Luther King Jr. would never have been allowed to make his speech, and people would have walked blind as to the truth of what was taking place within our country. Our news press would be extremely limited as to what they were allowed to say, and if not limited, would limit themselves in fear of punishment for what they believed was just.
I find Amendment IV (Right to trial by jury) to be as important as Amendment I as we cannot always trust only one person to make a fair trial. By having a jury, it allows the person to a non-prejudice or non-bias trial. The likelihood of everyone within the jury giving an unfair trial is greatly reduced from only one person making the decision. Having multiple people with different views on the trial helps to mend the views into one mold to come to a decision, where as only one person making the decision, their mind could be set the minute the accused steps in the court room.
The third Amendment I find to be very important is Amendment VIII. In Amendment VIII it states “nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted” is what makes this very important. This protects not only the innocent, but also the wronged that could have received punishment beyond reason due to any number of factors, race and sex being the top two. If this was not placed in the bill of rights, punishment could be death for something as simple as stealing candy from a candy shop. Where as it is wrong, it’s not something that should be taken to such measurements. If we took this out of the bill of rights, we would then lose any protection to the people if for any reason they were to be convicted of a crime.
Although I find these three to be very important, I do not find the other 7 Amendments to be less important.
