Smells like bad/lazy database building to me. Xbox uses a user id variable so that no matter what name you have the system can still find you. It looks like on PSN, the display name is the primary key to finding people on the system. This can be fixed if the PSN programmers shutdown PSN for a couple hours and run a program that assigns a value to be the primary key, or they could add a new variable called "alias" or something that is your actual display name and leave the old name as the primary key. But, they are just hella lazy, so oh well.
