the Wii U, is It Worth a Purchase?

Lately I have found myself a little bored with Gaming on my PS4 and X1. Don't get me wrong, last night we had an epic Bf4 session, but I'm still looking for something different.

When I have some friends over I find myself with nothing to pop in for us to play. The couch PvP on X1 and PS4 really is pathetic, with really only sports games as viable options (the new risk game will make it better)

I have never played a Wii U, however I am looking for something to be able to flip on and play that everyone isn't super awesome at and familiar with (like NHL) but is easy to pick up and play.

The Wii U seems to offer this with Super Smash Broa and Mario Kart, but I just can't bring myself to splurge in it without having some first hand opinions.

Does anyone own one? Or have played one? What's the controller like? Is it a good couch PvP system as advertised?

Nope, nope, and a big effin nope. I bought it when it first came out (got the special edition black version) played two games on it, the Mario U (one that came with it) and then Mario Party 9. After about having it for a month and a half went and traded it in for a deposit toward my PS4. The only reason I say it's not worth it is because the Wii U pad is a glorified controller that's too big and bulky, and you really need to have two sets of eyes, because what's on one screen isn't always on the other (secret spots, etc) I've been disappointed in Nintendo for a LONG time. They haven't really come out with a system that beats the N64, and would really expect a console that could either keep up or surpass the XB1 and PS4, especially since back in the early 90's they were top dog. They came out with the first handheld gaming system, and I don't know about you, but i played Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo way before I even knew what Crash Bandicoot was.

Also, there's only ONE Wii U pad per Wii U. So you can't go and buy more so all your friends have one. During Mario wii U there would be little bubbles that pop up on the pad that give you little bonuses once in a while, but player number two never got them because they don't pop up on the actual game screen.
