I also play CoC.
Unfortunately, I'm leading a clan as well, 40+ wars won with around a 26 win streak, so we're pretty solid. Lot of hardcore spenders and such there, so we have a lot of good guys who spend money if they have to.
We've played wars at numbers all the way up to 50, and we've found that around 25-40 are generally the wars that are most evened out in terms of strength.
Here is something I wrote for our clan and posted in our group chat app Line. Keep in mind it was written as a Clan Leader to my guys to get everyone on the same page, we had about 30 people. I added a few tips in this forum so my spelling or grammar may be off.

ACTIVITY
We expect each player in [my clan] to be active during war, and get two SOLID attacks in, anything less may result in a hasty kick to [Feeder clan]. We don’t want to kick players but this is war. War is hell. If you know you are going to be away, feel free to go to hypnos for a while, you are always welcome back.
DEFENSE
1) Protecting your Townhall in your war base is mandatory.
2) Try and find a good war base that suits your defenses. We have posted some examples in the other notes in this group chat note log. Also…look at our enemies bases, current or previous wars, and look at the ones we had trouble with….that might be a good base for you. Look at clash wiki or google image search your level townhall.
3) Ask for CC troops that suit your base set up. A centred CC full of archers is difficult to pull. An easily triggered CC might be better off to have a dragon in it. Your war CC is always reset and never needs to be refilled during a war. Remember this as your enemies will also always be full.
4) Defense against hogs: double big bombs and spring traps between defenses. An outer ring of defenses just outside your CC protection zone makes it harder to trigger CC. Avoid defenses between the core and that outer ring…it will lure the hogs in. Ask for examples and we will show you.
5) centre your CC and make it difficult for the enemy to trigger your troops out. A good war CC can be a huge help .
PREPARATION
5) Please let the Leaders / Co-leaders fill the war CC. We are going to give whats requested OR give what their war base will do well with. Max witches and valks. Max archers. Lvl 5+ wizards. Dragons , or effective mixes like 1 balloon rest archers, mix of witch wiz and minions.
SCOUTING
6) Do not raid without thoroughly scouting your enemy. Look at his non-war base too for trap or tesla levels/locations (best after they have been raided).
7) During prep day, we will post a war prep note in this group chat; you can reserve an attack by posting their number in the comments section of that note.
8) Just because you picked an enemy doesn’t mean it will be there when you go to raid. Be prepared with a backup plan.
9) Look for an enemy that has a weakness that is in your strengths. Tight spaced defenses and buildings with limited gaps are good for hogs. Spaced out bases with limited walls are good for golem, wiz, pekka. TH8’s with weak air defenses are good for drag attacks.
10) Do NOT raid without scouting. Period.
TACTICS
11) Ok you have scouted your enemy and built an army around them. Please chat with one of the co-leaders about your tactics and just ask for some advice.
12) Please don’t expect your level 2 hogs to win you every battle. Hell, don’t expect your level 5 hogs to do much on a well-built anti-hog base.
13) Have a back-up plan. Someone is bound to steal your raid sooner or later. Or all the time lol.
14) Learn to use other configurations of troops. Not just hogs, or dragons, and please do this experimentation anywhere BUT war. Havoc uses golems, pekka, and witches. Fly uses golem, wiz, and witch.
CLAN STRATEGY
15) Our clan strategy is to raid players around our same level. The weaker members should go first. If they do really well it allows the higher ups to hit the enemies stronger players. If the weaker players do not do well the higher ups may have to clean up those missed stars. Our #10 should hit their 10. Failing to follow this strategy messes up the war and screws us out of war loot. Thats bad.
16) This strategy is flexible, providing you discuss it with a leader, as we recognize sometimes higher players are weaker or fall into your strengths.
17) Avoid failures. Please for the love of god. Stop being Freddy Failure.
ATTACKING
18) DO NOT raid without full spells and full heroes. Just don’t.
19) DO NOT raid while drunk, overtired, or otherwise not focused.
20) DO NOT raid with an empty battery on your device.
21) DO NOT use basic troops. I will snap if I see a raid with 120 archers and a few giants. Use your best troops.
22) DO NOT ‘pop on’ to raid. Chances are you will fuck it up. Log on. Read chat. Scout again. Get pumped up. Then dominate. Some guys are busy and we get that. So it will happen. Just know the results are not always good.
23) Please try not to ‘race to war’ when the gates first open. Take your time. Relax. It’s a long war.
24) Request troops specifically for war that will compliment your raiding army. Do not request war troops with “Hit me with da stuff” or “Whatever”. Ask for real troops. Any other time we don’t care what you say. “Tacos”.
25) You MUST kill the enemies CC troops before launching your full raid. Try to lure them to a far corner away from defenses and then kill them all. Try to do it on the side you plan on starting from, if it’s safe, to maximize the benefit from all your troops. Here is a money CC kite strategy (luring them to their death). Trigger the enemies CC by using a few (2) giants. Count the number of troops triggered to make sure you got em all. You should know where the trigger ring and how many troop numbers is because you scouted right? Let the giants die . Now, use a healer and deploy it in a far corner away from defenses, preferably on a side you will raid from. The CC reinforcements will go to kill your healer. Just before they reach her deploy me wizards and archers to kill those troops. If you do it right you will save her ass and not lose a single troop.
26) Every star counts. For you and for the team. You don’t win shit if you don’t get at least one star on a raid. WE, as a clan, also don’t win shit if we lose the war. Do you really want to be that douchebag that lost us a war because of 1 star?
28) Communicate, Communicate, Communicate. Be patient and communicate your plan. Who are you raiding and how you plan on doing it. Talk it out. I may be in the top 5 but I still ask other people for their input about my plan.

Ok so that was the basic blurb I made. I have more on particular bases and defending against hogs etc. but check out ClashWiki and other resources. THE most important thing is to fix some of the weak war bases on the clan roster AND get everyone to raid . In a 10 member war its kind of important that the top. 5 raid.
