Hmmmmmm....
Australia has been known as Australia since 1804 and was named Australia by Matthew Flinders a convicted felon who was later captured by the French but it was Spanish explorer Pedro Fernandes de Quiros who named it Tierra Austrialia Del Espiritu Santo in honour of the royal house of Austria to which Spain was allied at the time.
Whether Australia was officially recognized as a Country in 1901 or not, Australia was already known world wide as Australia by 1824.
Now to Australians being better than Americans, Australia is just like America in many ways. It was invaded by several Countries with the British being the ones who took control over most of it by driving the Natives away from the gold rich areas just like they did in America.
If it wasn't for the settlement of other Country's people in Australia, there would be no Australia. With a population of only 25 million (52th) in the world compared to 318 million (3rd) in the world how can you not expect America to have more problems than a Country like Australia which is only safe from invasion because of the United States and the ANZUS Pact.
If Australia was not getting aided by the United States and several other Countries, it would not be what it is today. Even though Australia gained its "independence" in 1901, it is still a "dominion" of the British Empire.
Australia has done very little on its own, while American has done it all on its own since July 4th 1776!
Yes America is known as the "bully" of the world, but regardless of its bad reputation and being called the biggest "terrorist" nation in the world, America has everything.
A great thread and topic but Australia will never compare to America. Americans don't have to answer to other countries and worry about being invaded like Australia does.
Layser, you claim that America has hundreds of shootings, yet you don't mention the hundreds of shootings and killings that happen in Australia to the Aborigines. This is still going on today and Australia still denies such killings.
Australia is not any different than other fucked up corrupted Countries including the States.
Every single country has killings and some countries hide them better than others. To compare Australia to America in terms of crime, safety and things of that nature is like comparing apples and oranges.
The gun laws here are not the problem, its the people who decide to use those guns the wrong way. The united states has to worry about guns coming in from 2 sides, Canada and Mexico, Australia doesn't. While it may seem that Australia could have guns smuggled in from every direction because it is an island, the US and Countries help police the waters around it to prevent that from happening.
Banning firearms is not how you help keep crime rates down, take a look at Switzerland where every man 18 and over is issued a service weapon and they keep it with them until they are no longer serving the military. I believe they get to keep their weapon even after they finish serving but must keep record of how much ammo they use.
If every American was allowed to arm themselves and defend themselves like the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution says they can, there would be no crimes in the States, so blaming "our" gun laws for the shootings and the most recent one is very ignorant.
The reason for all these gun laws in the States is not to prevent crimes but to actually create crimes so that all these fucking politicians and district attorneys can make a name for themselves, their campaigns and have the people who commit such crimes pay fines and keep the richer getting richer by having to hire attorneys, lawyers and now even public defenders which used to be free in order to get out of a crime conviction.
You wait another 10-15 years, Australia will soon see itself in the same shoes as other countries such as the States.
