How many kills with a certain gun does it take to unlock a battlepack for that gun?
Think it depends on the weapon...you get the attachments for every ten kills...once all those are done then you start unlocking the packs. But that's not every ten...think it's every 50 after that.

In most cases it depends on the class of gun, yet some guns even vary within a class. The easiest way to check is to go to Battlelog -> Unlocks -> click a gun -> mouse over the attachments/battlepacks. Though, I'm not sure if you'll be able to see the "popup that says how many kills are required" from a smartphone.
Generally speaking, weapon battlepacks are first awarded 50 kills after the last attachment is unlocked (typically around 200 kills) then awarded every 50 kills after that. Most will award up to around 500 kills, though some less, depending on how many attachments are available for the weapon.
Examples:
Most assault rifles, first BP at 210, then 260, 310, 360, 410, 460, 510.
Most pistols, first BP at 140, then 190, 240.
Also remember, that at 500 kills you get the weapon's dog tag.

it pisses me off that in most cases i have to play longer with a gun to get my god damn Kobra RDS, and in most cases i won't get it until i'm 2 or 3 gun battlepacks deep.

Yeah I'm the same way. I'm all about the Kobra. I think I have it for every gun that matters now though.
