first here is the article - http://news.yahoo.com/group-unveils-...224102124.html
now, let me start of by saying i'm neither a satanist nor a christian. i don't believe in organized religion, at all, in any manner or form. this includes atheism (i find most atheists to be incredibly smug assholes by the way). this is not meant to rustle any jimmies. i'm just curious to see what other people think beyond the obvious "OH MY GOD, SATAN!" knee-jerk reaction.
my opinion - let them have their statue. this country was not founded on Christianity. it was founded on freedom of religion. if Christians are allowed the have crosses and statue's of Jesus beyond their places of worship then why can't they others who believe in something else?
i read in the article a quote that always manages to get under my skin and that was "not in the bible belt, that's not gonna fly in Oklahoma." now it's not that exact quote but more that line of argumentation that aggravates me. it's the people who think that this is a Christian country. well it's not. again i come back to the "this country wasn't founded on Christianity", and people who are under that belief really agitate me.
let me take this opportunity to share with you some quotes from some of our founding fathers about religion:
“If I could conceive that the general government might ever be so administered as to render the liberty of conscience insecure, I beg you will be persuaded, that no one would be more zealous than myself to establish effectual barriers against the horrors of spiritual tyranny, and every species of religious persecution.”~George Washington, letter to the United Baptist Chamber of Virginia, May 1789
“The Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion."~1797 Treaty of Tripoli signed by John Adams
"Lighthouses are more helpful than Churches"~Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to Horatio Spofford, 1814
Benjamin Franklin - in Poor Richard's Almanac
“In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. It is error alone that needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself.”
mini rant over.
