    Sorry, late to the party

I am a press and furnace monitor for SSI Technologies in Janesville, WI.

    I am a level 3, although I should have been a level 4 months ago. That is a $2.50/hour difference. So, ya...frustrated.

My job (in the simplest terms) is to take powdered metal <yep, a lot of things start with metal powder> and run it through a press varying from 50 to 500 tons, compacting it into a molded, yet fragile, piece. Now, these parts vary anywhere from an inch wide, 2mm thick, all the way to a foot wide, several inches thick. These piece vary in sizes, weights, and shapes.

After the parts are pressed, They go through a burn-off, burning all the defects and carbon out of the part with mixtures of Nitrogen, Hydrogen, and good ol' flame @ 1200 degrees.
Next, they go through Sinter. This is where the parts are cooked again, only this time at different gasses and heat temps. anywhere from 2025 to 2575 degrees, where the parts become as hard as any other steel product.

Through each process I am responsible for monitoring the parts, Checking the OAL (Over All Length),Weight, Step Heights, Burr Lengths, Core Steps, Hole to Hole Positioning, Crack Inspections, and Densities.

After that, they are shipped out to various companies such as Taylor Freezer, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Harley Davidson, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, ect. ect.

    I work 3rd shift, 12 days straight, 2 off = 4 days off a month.

so the next time you are driving down the road, just remember:

I am the guy who made sure your car is holding together. If it doesn't...... my bad ;P
