I've heard about this for some time. It is definitely a push for the gaming market and I think a great idea. Steam has already become a leader in PC gaming communities. The only issues AT FIRST, will be that it is linux based, which like the article says will cause a bit of grief for some game devs, but also like the article says, there are numerous ways to somewhat easily get around it.
The thing is that Microsoft controls windows, which most PC games are created for. Obviously Mac has made a big push in recent years... and a ton of people will still swear by PC gaming, and a lot of those gamers will still run windows. So, if you purchase a game license, your going to want to be able to play it on steam. period. that means on PC and on the steam box, so I can see it causing somewhat issues there... why would microsoft want to endorse the downfall of their own video game console by supporting this?
Personally I used to be a PC gamer but with technology rapidly progressing it was hard to keep up with all the new requirements with out having to spend tons of money. Thats why I switched to console I have had my xbox for years and it seems like everyone is on a more evenly playing field. I dont have to worry if someone has a faster processor or a better connection then me or a better video card. so NO i think consoles will always be around

There are so many things in the works for console gaming that it is going to be very difficult for anyone or anything to make console gaming obsolete.
I used to be a PC gamer myself as well and I have contemplated on going back but just like Morbid, having to keep up with the requirements just to be on a level playing field was and still is a pain in the ass.
