Activision Publishing has today announced that, according to the company’s numbers, the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on November 13th represented the biggest entertainment launch of all time, making it the fourth year in a row that the Call of Duty series has managed to achieve such a feat.
Activision has estimated that Black Ops 2 generated over $500 million in revenue in its first 24 hours of availability - CEO of Activision Blizzard, Bobby Kotick, commented:
“With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row.”
“Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for Harry Potter and Star Wars, the two most successful movie franchises of all time,” Kotick continued. “Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013.”
CEO of Activision Publishing, Eric Hirshberg added:
“I want to thank our incredible team at Treyarch for making an amazing game, everyone at Activision for making this brand a force of nature and our retail partners for their unprecedented support of this franchise.
“But most importantly I want to thank our millions of fans for their continued support and loyalty and for making us better every day.”
No exact sales numbers for the game were revealed, but a quick calculation (using a $60 as a base) reveals that we could be looking at around eight million units sold in one day alone (although more expensive versions of the game were also released, which counts towards the title’s overall revenue).
It was revealed
after release that approximately one million units of the game were sold during the midnight launch period alone, across GameStop stores, so this figure isn’t that far off the final total.
