Bombing Wildfires

We were chatting about my job and its easier to show you a video or two to go with a description.

I am the lucky bastard who flies above wildfires and coordinates the water/retardant bombing. Basically a strike team leader manning the incident. Assess the fire, come up with an attack plan, lead the bombers through a safety run, get control of the fire ( or not lol) and turn it over to the ground crew.

I know there are some Air Force folks kicking around, or those who dig aviation stuff. A lot of Military aircraft end up being repurposed as firefighting aircraft. The S2, TBM Avengers, C130's, and others got a second life bombing fires. The history of bombing fires and the pilots and aircraft that do it is pretty interesting and steeped in military background.

There was a wild fire near a friend's pot garden a few years back, and the big plane came over head and dusted all his plants with that red retardant. Killed all of his plants. He was so sad it was pathetic, but I couldn't help but laugh.

That pretty awesome what you do. I finally figured out how to use my contour roam 3. Ill find out for sure next weekend wheni take some videos for the purpose i bought it for. Cant wait to see some vids you get with yours!

Today is the first day back at work after a winter off. I will have a few months to get ready for fire season. We get our first group in May, a turbocommander birddog and a Lockheed Electra L-188 tanker.

I found un dan American video if what I/we do. Its just slightly different than how we do it. (Us racetracks their aircraft, and we stack them in the air column). If you have 10 minutes to kill check out the vid.

Well here we are again. The start of a new season. I am back at work 8-4 until the planes come online. My gaming will suffer a bit. Get the most time in when the wife is on afternoons.

I was going to take a lot of video last year but didn't buy a go pro because I bought a new Jeep. I did take some photos though. These were all taken by me.



Two of which ended up in company calendars so I was happy about that.
