I always wondered if pilots are ever allowed to hit mach speed (outside of residential) ever??

The only thing pilots can't do is break so if barrier. To be exact they cannot break speed of sound over anywhere in the US unless it's a deemed war excersize or state of emergence.

Yeah Maybe! Idk but I got to tell ya it's absolutely crazy watching some of the thing our planes can do. Watched an F-16 roll in at 99 miles an hour. As an exercise at the Air show they called it the slow attack.
